The students loved this book and were so intrigued by all that Emmanuel was able to accomplish- in spite of what many may have perceived as an obstacle or setback. As we talked about the book, many of them wanted to know how old Emmanuel is. His birth year is not listed in the book, but in the author's note we read that he completed his "ride across Ghana in 2001 at the age of 24." I challenged the students to calculate his age based on this information. This morning, students began coming to me with their answers. With some guidance, they were able to figure out Emmanuel's correct age. The students who participated received a free book and a poster as a prize!
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to read Emmanuel's Dream to Mrs. Skinner's 2nd grade class. This story is a biography about the life of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, who was born with a severely deformed right leg. In spite of his disability Emmanuel learns to ride a bike- pedaling with only one foot. Eventually, he rides his bike through Ghana- his native country.
